SET UP YOUR IP ADDRESS

The first thing you need to do to start using SiteSURV is to register your IP address with CyberPatrol. To make this easier for you we have automated much of the registration process to happen when you activate your SiteSURV subscription.  However, to complete the process, you must first determine if you are using a static or dynamic IP address.

There are two types of IP Addresses, static and dynamic. . Static IP addresses are permanent numbers assigned to an access point computer by an Internet service provider. Not every access point connects to the Internet with a static IP address. A static IP address usually needs to be specially requested or purchased from your ISP.  Most Internet service providers typically assign temporary IP addresses called a Dynamic IP address. A Dynamic IP addresses can change at any point in time.  This can present a problem to programs that identify who you are by your IP address.

Most small businesses and home users have Dynamic IP addresses. If you have not requested a static IP address or if you don’t know that your IP address is static, it is safe to assume your IP address is a dynamic one.

If you have a Static IP address, no further action is required. Your IP address is automatically detected and recorded when you activate SiteSURV.

If you have a dynamic IP address you need to finish your IP registration by completing the following steps.

If you have a dynamic IP address, SiteSURV requires you to run a software utility called SiteSURV Dynamic DNS Client on only one of the PCs connected to your access point. This software checks your IP address to see if it has changed. If it has changed, it automatically notifies CyberPatrol and updates your IP information so you may continue to use SiteSURV.

To install the SiteSURV Dynamic DNS Client follow these steps:

  1. Go to https://activation.cyberpatrol.com

  2. Click Dynamic DNS Clients in the toolbar. The following Screen will appear:

  6. Set Up is Complete.
Important: This application must be running on one of the PCs connected to your access point to assure your Dynamic IP Address is current in your SiteSURV account.
Note:  if the PC with the Dynamic DNS client goes offline (eg, it is physically removed from the network, or it shuts down), SiteSURV will eventually cease to work since the client will no longer be able to report Dynamic IP changes to CyberPatrol.  CyberPatrol checks for IP new addresses every hour.  If the IP address your access point is using is not in the SiteSURV activation database, SiteSURV will continue to work for 90 minutes.  If after 90 minutes the IP address is not recognized (because it has changed and the Dynamic DNS Client has not reported the change), SiteSURV will stop working and you will not have access to the Internet unless you reset your DNS to its original settings.
